Projects

Autumn Term:

Geography - there are two main projects for Year 4 this term. During the Rivers project, children will find out about how rivers form and will learn about the main river features. They will learn about major rivers in the United Kingdom and compare some of their distinguishing features. There is also the River Trip to Blashford Lakes where children will investigate river Geography, undertake fieldwork activities and identify creatures that live in rivers and ponds. During the Water for All project, children will discover places in the world which have good access to water and which places in the world do not. We have a visitor from Bournemouth Water during this project to help the children understand where our water comes from, how it reaches our home and explore ways of saving water.

Spring Term:

Geography - this term, we will move on to our next project about countries in Europe. Children will learn about the geography of Europe and investigate capital cities. In particular, they will be able to use maps to locate France within Europe and investigate some of the key geographical features of France such as the Alps.

History - our project for this term is Roman Britain. During this project, we will explore what life was like before and after the Roman Invasion and also study some of the reasons why the Romans wanted to invade. We will examine sources about Boudicca and comment on the lasting legacy of Roman life on Britain today. Children will learn about the period by studying sources and stories.

Summer Term:

The children will again study the lasting impact of invaders on our life today.

Children will learn about the key historical figure of Alfred the Great and how Anglo-Saxon Britain was ruled. Children will be taught about the reputation of the Vikings and how origins of historical sources affect our understanding. We will look at how Viking invaders reached Great Britain. Children will conclude the project by considering who had the greatest impact, the Anglo-Saxons or the Vikings.

Whilst we are at the Ancient Technology Centre, children will undertake different activities, which will help them to understand what life was like during Britain’s history. The activities we will take part in on the day include: blacksmithing, willow weaving, farming, construction and fire making. The Ancient Technology Centre provide tutors, who are experts in the various time periods, to lead these activities.
