PE

PE Intent:

At Ringwood Junior School we aim to provide effective planning and high-quality teaching that enables all children to engage and be inspired to take part in physical education within school and physical activity beyond the school day. We recognise that physical activity is an integral aspect in the development of the whole child’s physical and emotional well-being and as such, strive to make sessions enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We provide opportunities for pupils to develop personal values such as confidence, self-belief and a desire to improve, as well as life skills such as fairness, respect and sportsmanship.

Children develop the knowledge, competence and skills to excel in a broad range of sports and activities, culminating in competitive opportunities within school. We feel that this provides a basis for transferable skills and understanding that could be applied to any number of sports or games. It is through these experiences that children are able to apply their skills, work co-operatively and build strength of character and resilience.

This approach provides opportunities for pupils to become leaders, be creative and competitive, as well as face up to challenges as individuals, in groups and in teams. Children learn how to think in different ways and make decisions in response to these challenges. They learn how to reflect on their performance and plan and evaluate actions and ideas to improve the quality of their performance. Of equal importance is the enjoyment that children find from learning and working with others during Physical Education lessons together with competition against themselves and their peers, via ‘personal challenge’ and involvement in the New Forest School Sport Partnership.

Through the teaching of PE and sporting opportunities in school, we educate all pupils to be physically active through the development of their agility and physical co-ordination. These opportunities promote positive attitudes towards healthy and active lifestyles.

Implementation:

The PE curriculum has been designed to allow pupils to develop core skills of agility, balance and co-ordination which support specific development within a focus sport each half term. The varied sports and activities explored allow for full coverage of the National Curriculum themes (athletics, dance, gymnastics, OAA and games) whilst also exposing pupils to opportunities beyond everyday sport. PE Lessons are taught for two hours a week, exploring three sports per half-term in each year group.

There are opportunities to extend and challenge individual pupils and provide support for others to ensure everyone is achieving their best. A weekly ‘Personal Challenge’ allows individuals to be physically active for sustained periods of time, beat their personal best and engage in competitive situations.  Visits for each year group from the AFC Bournemouth Community Team encourages the children to lead healthy, active lives beyond sport focusing on attitude and personal strength of character.

We offer a wide range of curriculum enrichment activities which encourage children to be physically active beyond the school day and further develop creativity, individuality and sporting activity.

Participation in the New Forest School Sports Partnership enables those willing to extend and apply their learning to competitive situations (against other schools) which builds confidence, resilience and determination.

Being located on the south coast, we recognise the importance of swimming and ensure children have opportunities to develop their competence and confidence in both Year 4 and Year 5, with additional opportunities for support in Year 6, where it is needed.

Sports Leaders and Play Leaders

We encourage children at Ringwood Junior School to take an active role and voice in sporting and activities around school. Sports Leaders have been recruited across all year groups and amongst other roles, to encourage children to be more active at lunch and break times, to lead warm ups in PE lessons and to participate in student voice focus groups.

New Forest School Sports Partnership

Ringwood Junior School have been keen participants of the New Forest School Sports Partnership (NFSSP) for many years. With their support and guidance, we are able to provide children with a wide range of experiences and opportunities: from becoming leaders, feeling confident and proud to represent their school at competitions and ‘Can Do’ events and beginning to develop a lifelong habit of being active.

The competitions provide an excellent opportunity for pupils to experience and demonstrate our schools’ values of Teamwork, Respect and Integrity as they try their best against other schools within Hampshire.

School Games Mark

We are delighted to announce that Ringwood Junior School has maintained the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2024-2025 academic year!

The School Games Mark is a government lead award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sports Trust to reward Schools for their commitment to the development of competition across school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.  As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in areas of participation, competition, pupil leadership and sports clubs and we look forward to continuing to drive pupil involvement in sports with the recruitment of Sports Leaders across the school.

School Sports Premium

We make effective use of the School Sports Premium to further develop the quality of teaching through regular CPD opportunities and investment in resources and equipment that support effective progression in the curriculum and involvement in a broader range of sports.

We also invest in a range of strategies that raise attainment in PE and swimming.
